About Me

Hey All, I’m Chris Utter. I’m a lifelong basketball fan who probably spends as much time thinking about team building, optimizing rotations, and other coaching and front office decisions as I do about ball-screen coverages and ATO’s. Therefore this newsletter will include discussions of on-court topics, but also the business behind the game: the salary cap, contracts, trades, and how teams are actually trying to win (or not).

I’m a coach’s son, was a decent high school player in a midsize city, coached alongside my dad for more than a decade, worked as an engineer for nearly 15 years, started keeping my own cap sheets in 2012, and most recently, attended Sports Business Classroom in 2025, where I finally felt like I found my community. I started this Substack as a place to spill my thoughts out, more for myself than anyone else. But if you enjoy them too, come along for the ride!
